A modest rebuttal to a great writer...

I wonder if Doctorow would say the same today. I would suggest that he didn't have to market himself and his writing on social media the way most of us do these days. Writing and marketing are two full-time jobs, and sometimes it's difficult to decide which of the two is more important. Publishers want to know what you do to market yourself; how many followers you have and on how many platforms, what you've been posting, etc. The world has changed drastically in just the last few years. I used to have a "paper" mindset, not an "online" one, and I wondered why I wasn't getting acceptances. How do YOU feel about this issue, fellow writers?
